A confused reading of the page led me to think of this amusing variation:

One team is the Red-and-White team (that is, it is both Red and White, with Red being primary), and it is trying to vanquish the dastardly White-and-Red (that is, both Red and White, with White being primary) team. Both teams have access to both colours of balloon. The stag will only stop when presented with three balloons, one of which is one colour and the other two of which are the other colour.

So if you are on the Red-and-White team, your team of three needs to take two red balloons and one white one, and so on.

Of course, the scoring upshot of all this is that you get a net gain of one balloon for your team when you tie on three, so the scoring works out fine. But it's just amusing a) to have two teams very similar but different (the "Judean People's Front" effect) and b) to have to tie on the opposition colours. --Gervase Markham (talk) 10 August 2008

That could actually be a nice way to keep the scoring the same, while making sure the stag gets an impressive number of balloons even if there aren't many players. Ooh, ill-advised variant: instead of having a set end-time, keep playing until the balloons become so unmanageable that the stag is stuck and unable to proceed any further.

The trouble with this game, with or without that variant, is that some players will start by heading off in the opposite direction to the stag, and that's a bit boring for them - if they do this it's bound to be at least fifteen or twenty minutes before they even see the stag. Perhaps this could be fixed by using a park or somewhere with more open spaces as the playing area, so that even if you're in the wrong place there's a good chance of seeing the stag across a lake or a field... --Holly Gramazio (talk) 12 August 2008

I think that the route the stag takes could address the not-finding-it problem Holly - as could integrating a moose hunt type photo update (maybe this could be a special power unlockable in the game).

Anyway, just wanted to note that at H&S08, the stag had an assistant (me) who helped him interpret whether a presentation was correct or not, and that this worked very well, both to prevent cheating and to game the experience slightly in favour of those teams playing catchup. Good point, I've updated the rules to include a Stag Warden.

I've also mentioned the rule about the stag being "spooked" by large numbers of balloons, which seemed useful for stopping the game from being bogged down by a large, jostling crowd of supplicants, last year. --Kevan (talk) 2009-05-21 12:21:21
