So, with the weather getting worse, I did some recon at the Barbican last night with a view to running some games there.

  • It's _huge_
  • It's hard to navigate: players _will_ get lost
  • It's generally well-lit
  • It's, generally, nearly pedestrian-free (but there's some overview from offices / shops)
  • There are lots of interesting nooks / pillars / staircases that make stealth possible
  • While there are lots of covered walkways, it would be difficult to design a game that uses them exclusively. Players are going to get at least a bit wet.

I'd like to start kicking some ideas around. So far, I'm thinking the 'Night Watch' model: players go to set waypoints in order (their route is up to them), and if they are _seen_ by actor-guards, Something Bad happens. I picked this over the 'Journey' model (you have to be _caught_) because the Barbican has lots of steps and it's very slippery in the rain. In NW, you're often running _to_ something but never running _away_.

Players will need to be easily identifiable. Guards may have some trouble being _really_ aggressive in what is, after all, a public area. So what about: all players wear a player number ("CITIZEN 34"). If the guards are close enough to see your number, they just SMS "34" to some control number, which maintains a scoreboard and triggers an SMS to the player saying "Guard 7 reports you are out of your assigned area. Lose 1000 citizenship points! After 2000 more points your citizenship will be revoked.".

In terms of theme, City 17 / District 9 might be fun. The guards can be "Friendly Citizen Rights Advisors", or similar. The mission is to sneak through the Rich Sector in order to ... mumble ... in order to Bring The System Down, man. --gwyn (talk) 2009-10-16 09:21:44
