A security motorcade snakes through the city streets, flanked by police cars with patrol bikes checking the path ahead. Turning a corner, the route is suddenly blocked, and an unseen vehicle rolls out of an alleyway to close the road behind...

Setup

Split the players into two equal teams, the Cops and the Robbers, with one player on the Cops team representing a Security Van. The Cops are trying to manoeuvre the van through the city streets, without the Robbers setting an ambush and pinning them in.

All the players should wear some form of visible identification (such as a badge, or a hat) - Cops should be distinct from Robbers, and the Van should be distinct from the other Cops.

If you're playing in an environment that not every player is familiar with, give everyone a map of the playing area, with the start zone and a target end zone clearly marked.

The Robbers get a sixty-second head start, to disperse into the streets and start planning their ambush.

Gameplay

The Cops win if they can get the Van to the end zone. The Robbers win if they can pin the Van down in such a way that it clearly cannot reach its destination. (It should be pretty obvious when this has happened.)

Players are free to walk, run and hide around the playing area. The only restrictions are:-

  • The Van cannot move past a Robber. If there is a Robber standing in front of the Van, the Van must either stop, or turn around and go a different way.
  • Robbers are not allowed to run after the Van. They can run towards it if it's coming towards them (which means the Van won't be able to break past a Robber who's blocking the road), they can run off into side-streets to cut it off a different way, but they can't directly pursue it if it's fleeing from them.

Use of mobile phones and secret handsignals is encouraged.

Uncertainties

Prior to testing, it's not clear if "the Van cannot move past a Robber" will always be completely unambiguous - in some environments, it might be useful for the Robber to hold their arms outstretched as a "roadblock", to indicate a line which the Van cannot cross. This would also double as a clear sign that a Robber has closed the road.
